General Internal Medicine Division
Our mission is to promote and deliver equitable, compassionate, and exceptional outpatient and inpatient care as part of a connected thriving teaching and learning practice. We strive to be a leading Division of General Internal Medicine whose teamwork contributes to the health of a diverse community through exemplary clinical care, education, and research.
A Distinguished History of Providing Internal Medicine Services
General Internal Medicine at Hennepin Healthcare has a long and distinguished history of providing Internal Medicine services for our community in both the outpatient and inpatient setting. We provide care across multiple clinics including the downtown Clinic and Specialty Center, Brooklyn Park Clinic, Hennepin County Jail, Healthcare for the Homeless, Coordinated Care Center, and Hennepin Health Access Clinic. This care is delivered while providing outstanding teaching and training in General Internal Medicine by clinicians and academic leaders known locally, regionally, and nationally.
We have a practice environment where individuals can follow their passions while staying connected to each other and our collective mission to care for the underserved, educate the next generation of providers, and conduct nation-leading research. General Internal Medicine has meaningful and productive relationships with many other divisions and departments, including Hospital Medicine, Pediatrics, Addiction Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, Emergency Medicine, and Orthopedics. We are also known for exceptional leadership within our division over the years, which includes Drs. Nicole Lurie, Craig Garrett, Mark Linzer, and current Division Director, Tyler Winkelman.
Clinical Care
The General Internal Medicine Division cares for adult patients in a variety of ambulatory settings within Hennepin County. We provide acute care, comprehensive chronic disease management, and preventative care services for medically complex patients with the help of a multidisciplinary team. Our teams include Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), physicians, psychologists, pharmacists, RNs, MAs, Social Workers, Care Coordinators, and front desk staff.
In addition to a wide variety of clinical services as listed below, several General Internal Medicine Division members provide clinical care within other divisions and departments such as Hospital Medicine, Pediatrics, Orthopedics, and Addiction Medicine. The General Internal Medicine Division provides over 60,000 visits annually across its diverse patient care services.

Education & Training
Our faculty provide expertise and teaching to 70 residents in the Internal Medicine Residency Program through our work precepting in the Clinic and Specialty Center (CSC) General Internal Medicine clinics. Our faculty members also contribute to teaching Internal Medicine residents, residents from other specialties, and dozens of the University of Minnesota medical students rotating in the Acute Care Clinic and inpatient internal medicine services.
Research
Research in General Internal Medicine is primarily embedded within two research groups: the Health, Homelessness, and Criminal Justice (HHCJ) Lab and the Institute for Professional Worklife (IPW). The HHCJ Lab's mission is to overcome barriers to optimal health and wellness for people experiencing homelessness and criminal justice involvement through research and collaboration. The mission of IPW is to address provider burnout and promote wellness for clinicians and healthcare providers at Hennepin Healthcare and across the country. We have several other research studies in the Division focused on understanding and addressing racial and ethnic disparities in addiction treatment, lung cancer screening, cardiovascular disease, and other common chronic conditions.

We currently have approximately 60 physicians and Advanced Practice Providers practicing in our many clinics, teaching in resident clinic and in the hospital, and performing scholarly activities. We also have organizational leaders in quality and system operations within GIM, as well as several faculty who teach at the University of Minnesota.

I have been the Division Director of General Internal Medicine since 2021. I enjoy working at Hennepin Healthcare because of our mission to care for underserved populations, a strong academic focus, and a permeating spirit of collegiality. General Internal Medicine is a thriving academic division with clinicians, educators, and researchers dedicated to serving our community and reducing health inequities. I also co-direct the Health, Homelessness, and Criminal Justice Lab at the Hennepin Healthcare Research Institute. My research primarily focuses on the intersection of health care and criminal legal involvement. Finally, I am the President and co-founder of the Minnesota EHR Consortium, a statewide collaboration between the 11 biggest health systems in Minnesota and the Minnesota Department of Health.

Carmen Divertie, MD

Dr. Divertie is board certified in internal medicine, specializing in Latino health issues, diabetes mellitus, and some orthopedic non-surgical procedures. Outside of Western medicine, she has a special interest in non-traditional medicine practices like guided imagery and teaching her patients self-hypnosis so they can participate actively in their healing. She is fluent in Spanish and Quechua, the Inca language. Dr. Divertie had the privilege of starting the HCMC Spanish Clinic which has now a group of dedicated, bilingual, culturally competent, and compassionate providers caring for our Spanish-speaking patients. In addition, she started the HCMC Pre-Op Clinic to provide timely optimization of the patient’s chronic medical problems before their surgical procedures.

I have been a member of the Hennepin Healthcare Medical Staff since 2003. During that time, I have held several clinical, academic, and administrative positions, including Director of the Hospital Medicine Division, Interim Chief of the Department of Medicine, and the Vice President of Medical Affairs.
I teach at the University of Minnesota Medical School, and I am currently the Governor of the Minnesota Chapter of the American College of Physicians (the nation’s largest specialty physician organization).
From 2009-2021, I was the host of “Healthy Matters” which was a live radio broadcast and now am the host of a health podcast called “Healthy Matters with Dr. David Hilden.”
I am board-certified in Internal Medicine and am most proud of my roles as an academic internal medicine physician, both in the hospital and the Internal Medicine clinic.

The majority of my clinical practice centers on providing primary care in the Medicine Clinic, with a focus on gender-affirming medical care through our Adult Gender and Sexual Health Clinic. I also enjoy getting to spend 6 weeks each year on the Inpatient Medicine teaching service. I also have dedicated time through the University of Minnesota for assessment and clinical coaching of MS3 students rotating here at Hennepin.

I have been a primary care physician and leader at Hennepin since 2009, first as Director of the General Internal Medicine Division until 2017, then as Vice-Chair, and more recently as Director of the Office of Education, Mentorship, and Scholarship (OEMS) for the Department of Medicine. As Director of the Institute for Professional Worklife (IPW), I oversee a large national research operation in understanding and reducing stress and burnout among healthcare workers. As Director of the Hennepin Healthcare Services (HHS) Office of Professional Worklife (OPW) at Hennepin, I am dedicated to improving work-life and wellness among the 1000 HHS physician and Advanced Practice Clinician providers through an annual wellness survey and a network of Wellness Champions in the 16 clinical departments. It is a privilege and joy to come to work every day at HHS!

Dr. Prasad has special interests in integrative health and culturally-inspired patient care, inter-professional education, community engagement, and physician well-being.
Her career path was influenced by the world’s worst industrial disaster at the time involving Union Carbide in Bhopal in 1984 during her final year of medical school. She moved to the United States in 1988 and began her residency training in Internal Medicine at SUNY Health Science Center in Syracuse before moving to the University of New Mexico to complete her training. She also completed a fellowship in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona Medical Center and a leadership training called Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine at Drexel University.
While at the University of New Mexico as a faculty member, she developed the Center for Life, a center for patient care, learning, and community education. The Center for Life has received national recognition for its patient-centered clinical care and outcomes, innovative teaching programs, and wellness initiatives.

I am an internist, lawyer, and mediator with particular interest and skill in both teaching about, and directly mediating, conflict among health care professionals. In practice, this work is done through my role as our hospital’s Mediation and Conflict Resolution Officer. I also do work in the areas of provider wellness and leadership development and coaching. Both locally and nationally, I enjoy helping everyone from front-line clinicians to healthcare executive leaders and administrators learn how to successfully evaluate and address conflict while navigating challenging issues and working to move forward. Since 2014 I have been committed to supporting patients and families at Hennepin Healthcare and its affiliate, Hennepin County Health Care for the Homeless, to achieve and maintain optimal health. I believe this happens best when patients, families, and multi-disciplinary care teams work together to achieve wellness in body, mind, and spirit.
I am a board-certified family medicine provider who specializes in the care of people experiencing homelessness. I enjoy working to align health care with patient and family goals. I conduct research to improve health and wellness with and for people experiencing homelessness through the Health, Homelessness, and Criminal Justice (HHCJ) Lab at Hennepin Healthcare Research Institute. I have a particular focus on how the healthcare system can better integrate support for body, mind, and spirit for people experiencing homelessness and living with diabetes and other chronic diseases.
