Pediatric Vaccine Mobile
While research for a COVID-19 vaccine make the headlines, a looming crisis over childhood immunization rates has surfaced.
Early in the pandemic, families were understandably nervous to come to clinics for preventative healthcare. Now across our state and nation, childhood immunization rates have begun to plummet and there is a looming risk of not just COVID-19, but vaccine preventative diseases like measles and pertussis.
Thanks to contributions to our Hennepin Heroes Fund, Hennepin Healthcare was able to pilot a Vaccine Mobile in May providing immunizations to pediatric patients. Families were served in Minneapolis, Brooklyn Center, Champlin, Burnsville and Richfield. Twenty-seven percent of the patients took advantage of our Spanish speaking provider.
Let’s Keep It Rolling
Schools anticipate a high number of kindergartners will not have their vaccines before the start of classes. With your help, we could serve hundreds of vulnerable families with this local solution and reduce the spread of preventable diseases. Just $47,000 keeps the Vaccine Mobile rolling through the rest of this year.
Our Vaccine Mobile is staffed with a paramedic, a pediatric nurse practitioner, and occasionally a pediatric medical resident. The team sees toddlers, kindergartners, and adolescents who are behind or due for their vaccines. Visits are conducted in the mobile outside of the home. In addition to vaccines, the team comes prepared with cloth masks, books to promote literacy, and food bags for families in need.
