Program Overview

The Dialectical Behavior Therapy Intensive Outpatient Program (DBT IOP) at HCMC provides standard, full-model DBT services to adult outpatients. Dialectical Behavior Therapy was developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan. "Dialectical" refers to finding the balance between things that seem not to go together. "Behavior" refers to the focus on behavior change.

HCMC's DBT IOP is certified by the Minnesota Department of Human Services and is designed to help individuals with borderline personality disorder who are struggling with chronic suicidal risk. The program is also appropriate for individuals with other mental health diagnoses who experience impulsivity and/or intentional self-harm. Components of the program include individual therapy, skills training groups, phone coaching and provider consultation.

Program Schedule

Individuals who participate in DBT IOP attend weekly skills training groups and weekly individual therapy appointments. Participants also use 24/7 phone coaching.

There are four components in the DBT IOP program:

  • Skills training group: to teach individuals new behavioral skills in order to increase mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotion regulation, and distress tolerance
  • Individual therapy: to help increase motivation, address challenges, and make progress toward goals
  • Phone coaching: to support individuals as they apply skills to all relevant areas of their lives
  • The fourth component of DBT IOP is provider consultation. DBT providers attend their own weekly consultation team meetings designed to help providers deliver the most effective treatment possible.
