General Surgery

General surgeries are usually planned, involving a clinic visit with your general surgeon to evaluate your condition and determine if surgery is needed. Once it is determined that surgery is the best option and what procedure is the most appropriate, a plan of action is made.

If you need a minor procedure, it is most appropriate to perform it in a clinical setting. This is called an outpatient surgery. Your doctor will decide this during your clinic evaluation. If you need more than a day for recovery and need to be admitted to the hospital, your doctor will decide when that will happen.

Hennepin Healthcare is a major Minnesota surgical hospital. In 2022, 11 out of 13 general surgeons performed 2,405 operative procedures. As a teaching hospital, Hennepin Healthcare's surgery residency program teaches future surgeons to be the best. Residents rotate through specialty surgeries but come out with a general surgery specialty. Residents at Hennepin Healthcare learn from the best teachers (the surgeons) and mentors.
