Wheelchair Seating and Mobility Specialty Service

Physical therapists are licensed clinicians trained to evaluate physical measurements, range of motion, strength, coordination, sensation, reflexes, skin integrity, balance, transfers, and ambulation (moving from place to place). We hold additional certifications specific to wheelchair, seating and positioning needs.

Our Goals:

• Efficiently assist with the process to obtain appropriate mobility equipment
• Maximize the patient’s safety and independence with the recommended equipment
• Provide excellent patient-centered care
• Utilize reliable and valid outcome measures
• Communicate effectively with all team members

What to Expect:

Once a referral to physical therapy is received from you or your health care provider, you will be scheduled for a one hour evaluation. Your therapist will recommend additional sessions if necessary. Your physical therapist will:

• Complete a thorough evaluation
• Provide mobility training (equipment listed below)
• Utilize pressure mapping (see next page, first section)
• Review insurance criteria and coverage for mobility equipment
• Write the Letter of Medical Necessity including justification for the recommended equipment
• Communicate with the team
• Work directly with Durable Medical Equipment (DME) suppliers
