Program Overview

HCMC's DBT IOP is certified by the Minnesota Department of Human Services and is designed to help individuals with a borderline personality disorder who are struggling with chronic suicidal risk. The program is also appropriate for individuals with other mental health diagnoses who experience impulsivity and/or intentional self-harm. Components of the program include individual therapy, skills training groups, phone coaching and provider consultation.

About Dialectical Behavior Therapy

The DBT program guides individuals in working to find the balance between accepting things as they are and working on making needed changes.  Research has shown that DBT is more effective at reducing suicidality, self-injurious behavior, and related symptoms when compared to usual treatment. Many individuals who benefit from DBT have not been helped by other treatments. Other individuals have found past treatment helpful but continue to struggle with suicidality, self-injurious behaviors, and other problems that are life-threatening or that interfere with quality of life. DBT is an appropriate next step for such individuals.

Program Schedule

Individuals who participate in DBT IOP attend weekly skills training groups and weekly individual therapy appointments. Participants also use 24/7 phone coaching.

There are four components in the DBT IOP program:

  • Skills training group: to teach individuals new behavioral skills in order to increase mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotion regulation, and distress tolerance
  • Individual therapy: to help increase motivation, address challenges, and make progress toward goals
  • Phone coaching: to support individuals as they apply skills to all relevant areas of their lives
  • The fourth component of DBT IOP is provider consultation. DBT providers attend their own weekly consultation team meetings designed to help providers deliver the most effective treatment possible.
