Whittier Imaging provides patients the latest in diagnostic imaging technology, interventional radiology, and vein care. Vein care includes varicose and spider vein repair as well as treatment of other vascular conditions. After a comprehensive venous evaluation, treatment planning is individualized to achieve the best possible outcome. We combine the latest minimally invasive technologies to make patients look and feel their best.
At Whittier Imaging Vein Care, you will undergo a comprehensive assessment of your veins by a specialist with extensive training and experience in treating patients with vascular disease. Your past vein history and current leg problems will be reviewed. A detailed physical exam and complete ultrasound evaluation of the venous systems of your legs will be performed.
Your specialist will carefully explain the how veins function and the details of your assessment. An individualized treatment plan will be devised to specifically address your vein care needs.
Ambulatory Phlebectomy is a minimally invasive technique to remove varicose veins through tiny incisions in the skin. The skin incisions are as small as 1 mm and veins are extracted with a phlebectomy hook. The procedure causes minimal pain and produces excellent cosmetic results. Long-term outcomes are excellent. In contrast to sclerotherapy of large varicose veins, ambulatory phlebectomy minimizes the risks of residual hyper pigmentation. The small size of the skin incision or puncture usually results in little or no scarring.
Sclerotherapy is a method for eliminating veins by injecting a solution, called a sclerosing agent. This causes an irritation to the inner lining of the vein resulting in closure of the vein. A tiny needle is used to perform the injections. Most patients experience minimal discomfort during the procedure. The majority of persons who have sclerotherapy will have satisfying results. The number of treatments vary depending on the severity and desired outcomes.
We utilize both direct and ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy for treating larger varicose veins. Typically 2-3 sessions are required to achieve optimal results. These procedures are often performed after treating reflux in the great saphenous vein.
For primarily cosmetic concerns, such as spider veins and reticular veins, sclerotherapy is an excellent tool to improve cosmetic appearance. We utilize the latest methods and medicines to perform these procedures. Most patients will require two or more sessions.
An initial test treatment with sclerotherapy therapy may be performed on the same day as the initial consultation. A detailed treatment plan is then outlined. Sclerotherapy is typically performed over several sessions spaced 2-6 weeks apart.
Vein Ablation, or Endovenous Laser Ablation
We offer our patients Endovenous Laser Ablation for treating varicose veins and venous insufficiency. The laser seals off the abnormally functioning vein preventing blood from "leaking" back into the leg. The procedure is performed using local anesthesia and requires a tiny incision leaving virtually no scar. Compared to traditional "vein stripping" surgery, endovenous ablation is more effective, with fewer side effects, less invasive, and causes minimal pain during recovery.
Endovenous Laser Ablation successfully destroys the abnormally functioning vein in nearly 100% of patients. Occasionally residual varicose veins that persist in the skin will require further treatment with either ambulatory phlebectomy or sclerotherapy treatments. These subsequent treatments are usually performed several weeks after laser ablation.

This is a hospital-based clinic owned by Hennepin Healthcare. Many insurance plans pay for health care services provided in a hospital-based clinic differently than those provided in a doctor’s office. Your insurance may require that you meet your annual deductible and/or require that you pay a percentage of the bill rather than just an office visit co-payment. You should check with your insurance company if you have any questions. Read our FAQs about hospital-based clinics to learn more.
