Comprehensive Cancer Center receives local ACS CHANGE grant funded by NFL’s Crucial Catch

Vikings’ Alexander Mattison to visit, talk about the importance of breast cancer screenings

On Tuesday, October 24, running back Alexander Mattison and the Minnesota Vikings will support the fight against cancer by visiting Hennepin Healthcare as part of Crucial Catch, a partnership between the American Cancer Society and National Football League (NFL). Mattison will be joined by Dr. Abigail Madans, board-certified surgeon who specializes in breast surgical oncology, to discuss the importance of cancer screenings and his personal connection to cancer while meeting patients and staff members of the facility.

Hennepin Healthcare, an academic medical center and safety net healthcare system, is a recipient of the American Cancer Society’s CHANGE grant funded by NFL Crucial Catch efforts. CHANGE grant funding aims to increase access to breast, cervical, colorectal, and lung cancer screenings, as well as preventative HPV vaccinations. The grants are part of a group of nearly 200 projects launched by the American Cancer Society that focus on improving cancer screening and HPV vaccination rates in targeted communities.

“We are so appreciative of the resources provided by the American Cancer Society and the NFL,” said Hennepin Healthcare CEO Jennifer DeCubellis. “Many of the patients we serve face so many challenges in their lives, and cancer screenings may not be their top priority. The support provided by American Cancer Society CHANGE grant funding helps us increase access to lifesaving cancer screenings, giving our patients an opportunity to find cancer early when it may be easier to treat.”

MORE INFO:
Since 2009, the American Cancer Society and National Football League (NFL) have partnered to fight cancer and save lives through Crucial Catch. Along with educating the public about the importance of prevention and early detection, the initiative raises funds to help community health centers and health systems in under-resourced areas increase access to cancer screening. Funds raised by Crucial Catch go towards the American Cancer Society’s CHANGE and Links to Care grants, projects that use various resources to increase access to breast, cervical, colorectal and lung cancer screening, preventative HPV vaccination, and follow up care in NFL markets. Over the past 11 years, Crucial Catch funding has contributed to over 650,000 screenings and reached more than 1.3 million individuals.
