What is a Driving Assessment?

A clinic-based driving assessment is done by an occupational therapist (OT) at Hennepin Healthcare’s Clinic and Specialty Center.  The goal of the driving assessment is to keep individuals driving safely for as long as possible.

This assessment is appropriate for those who have experienced changes in their physical abilities, thinking processes, or overall health that may impact driving

The assessment will include tests for:

  • Vision
  • Strength
  • Movement
  • Thinking
  • Reaction time

You may also do testing with a drive simulator.

  • The drive simulator is a computer that takes you through some life-like situations.
  • The drive simulator is able to give information about how you would usually drive.

If you wear glasses, please bring them to your appointment.  It often takes two appointments to finish the assessment.

Based on this assessment, your doctor will make recommendations for driving.  If you need more testing your doctor may send you for an on-the-road test at another clinic.

If you are interested, talk to your doctor about a referral to Occupational Therapy for a clinic-based driving assessment.
