Commitment to Patient-Centered Care
“My goal is to connect with each patient to understand his or her current state of health and identify barriers to the pursuit of health. I believe that, by working together, the patient and his or her healthcare team can be more effective in improving health through medical and interventional treatments as well as changes in formal and informal social support systems.”
Clinical Expertise
Dr. Carlson specializes in general cardiology and cardiac imaging and is the director of the Echocardiography Laboratory. As a general cardiologist, Dr. Carlson has developed a Cardio-Oncology Clinic (the management of cardiovascular diseases affected patients with cancer) and is working with colleagues in Cardiology and Obstetrics to create a Cardiovascular Health in Pregnancy Clinic. She has additional interests in heart failure and the role of co-production in health. As a cardiac imaging specialist, Dr. Carlson is trained in multi-modality imaging of the heart, including echocardiography, cardiac MRI, cardiac CT, and cardiac nuclear imaging. She seeks to optimize the quality of these imaging modalities and ensure that the ideal study is performed for each clinical scenario. She also serves as an Associate Medical Director for ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, which provides temporary support for the heart and lungs).
