Knapp Rehabilitation Center
Rehabilitation happens all over the hospital to many patients in many units. Knapp Rehabilitation Center is an inpatient specialty program of Hennepin Healthcare serving adolescent and adult patients who have been traumatically injured or disabled. In 2023, Knapp began partnering with Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, the number one rehabilitation hospital in the nation.
Knapp is a 27 licensed bed inpatient unit at Hennepin Healthcare. The caring and skillful staff care for patients with very complex issues. Partnering with Shirley Ryan will bring in even more expertise and collaboration into the rehab plan. They bring novel approaches to treatments which will lead to even better patient outcomes. Specialty Programs
Brain Injury Program
A comprehensive program for traumatic brain injury and other brain conditions is implemented by a team of specialists. The team works with the patient to minimize the physical/cognitive impairments experienced with brain injury. Stroke Specialty Program
An individualized intensive, coordinated rehabilitation program is designed for persons who have experienced ischemic strokes and hemorrhagic strokes, including aneurysms.
Inpatient Services
The experienced, interdisciplinary Knapp rehabilitation staff knows the importance of patient and family as valuable members of the team They partner with the patient and family to plan progress by maximizing function, preventing complications, teaching compensatory strategies for persons’ activity limitations and by assisting with planning for a safe discharge.
The rehabilitation physician provides program management for each patient served. Other hospital physicians may be involved during the rehabilitation program to manage medical or surgical care.
Admission Criteria
A pre-admission evaluation is conducted before admission to the Knapp inpatient rehab program. This evaluation is done by a physician who specializes in rehabilitation medicine. To ask questions about a
referral to Knapp or to begin the evaluation process, contact the admissions coordinator at 612-873-3585.
- Age 13 or older
- Ability (endurance and energy) and willingness to participate in at least 3 hours of therapy each day
- A specific plan for discharge to a destination other than another facility with enough assistance or supervision as needed
- Freedom from ventilator support
- If a complete spinal cord injury, the level must be at or lower than cervical 7
- Medically stable condition
Outpatient Services
Outpatient services are available at Hennepin Healthcare after patients have completed their Knapp inpatient acute rehabilitation program.
Services may include physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, clinical psychology, neuropsychology and social service. Outpatient therapies are available at the Clinic & Specialty Center.
