Services
The ALS Center of Excellence treats patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive degenerative disease of the nervous system. The disease is rare, and can affect individuals from any background.
In the United States, more than 5,000 people are diagnosed with ALS each year. Early symptoms of ALS include muscle stiffness and weakness and may include difficulty with speech and swallowing. Individuals are affected in different ways, and the disease progresses differently in each person. Patients are diagnosed through neurological testing and a study of the individual's medical history. ALS patients require a great deal of physical and emotional care from family, friends, and health care professionals.
The ALS Center of Excellence is located within the Neurology Clinic.
The appointment line for ALS appointments is 612-873-5465.
